Before a new study programme is established at the Faculty, the University conducts an appraisal to determine whether the programme meets the requirements to become part of the range of programmes offered by the University. In these cases the Faculty of Medicine starts from Lund University’s general administrative procedures and guidelines.

For instance, the Faculty considers how the programme is geared to the needs of students and the labour market, its financing, and what link it has to research in the subject.

A decision to discontinue a study programme must also be made on well-considered grounds. For example, account must be taken of the students who are on the programme as well as of the University’s range of programmes and mission as a whole.

Programme and course syllabuses

The Faculty of Medicine secures information on programme and course syllabuses using Lund University’s implementing regulations concerning programme and course syllabuses. 

The Undergraduate Education Board (UEB) adopts programme syllabuses and has delegated adoption of course syllabuses to the relevant programme board (according to UEB’s Rules of Procedure). The level of delegation is the same for the revision of both course and programme syllabuses.

Programmes established

Six-year university medical degree 

The Government adopted an amendment to the Higher Education Ordinance that entered into force on 1 July 2019. The amendment means that university medical degrees starting after 30 June 2016 will consist of six years of full-time studies (360 higher education credits) instead of the previous five and a half years (330 higher education credits). An extensive application was submitted to the UKÄ for a permit to issue degrees for the new medical programme. This was granted by the UKÄ.
