Call for grant applications 2026

The Mats Paulsson’s foundation for research, innovation and societal development promotes scientific research in life science. Since 2019, priority is given to supporting research projects with high innovation potential and relevance to society in the near future.

Since 2019, the Foundation has awarded SEK 104.2 million in grants to 47 research projects of this type at Lund University and Malmö University.

With the above-mentioned focus, the Foundation invites the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University and Malmö University to prioritize applications within the following project types in 2026:

  • Innovative research projects in life science
  • Innovative research projects specifically in ATMP and/or cancer
  • Equipment critical for the implementation of specific innovative research projects in the above-mentioned areas.

Applications for stage 1 must be registered and submitted via the Foundation's application system by no later than 28 April, 2026.

The Faculty of Medicine's handling procedure for applications for the 2026 calls for project grants from the Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation (MAW) and the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (MMW)

The deadline for Letter of Intent (LoI) for the above calls is Monday 1 December 2025. LoI should be sent to birgitta [dot] larsson [at] med [dot] lu [dot] se

Please note that the LoI submitted to the Faculty of Medicine must contain the following:

  • The information described in Appendix 1 of the Management rules linked below
  • A maximum of one third of a page (in a Word document without a template or signatures) where it must be described why the project and the project group's constellation are important. This text will be included in the faculty's motivation that is submitted to the Research Board. If the application is selected to be submitted to the foundations by LU, the text will also be part of the Vice-Chancellor's letter. Formulate the text as if it were written by the dean.
  • In addition, applicants must complete the checklist (Appendix 2 of the Procedure Order) as far as possible. The faculty then adds the remaining information.

The MMW and MAW foundations have announced that they intend to alternate annually between open project calls and targeted/thematic calls. The upcoming call (2026) is open (i.e. without a specific theme) and the call for 2027 is expected to be thematic/targeted.
