Publishing costs
Lund University has agreements with several publishers that offer LU authors discounted publication fees in relation to the publisher's list price.
Part of the publication cost is paid centrally by LU. The rest of the cost is distributed to the faculties and it is based on the number of publications and the amount of research income. The faculty then bills the publishing researcher for this part of the publication costs. The same applies to publications in pure OA journals that are not included in any of the publishing agreements.
At the Faculty of Medicine, this means that everyone who publishes an article, regardless of where it is published, pays approximately 10-30% of the list price for the publication. The percentage varies from one billing cycle to the next. This means that you do not know what the final amount will be when you publish, as it is not fixed in advance but is adjusted retrospectively every six months. Since this distribution model was introduced, the percentage has varied between 10% and 21.5%.
The University Library (UB) pays part of the cost of publication and then distributes the rest of the costs to the faculties. Thereafter, the faculty forwards the remaining cost to the publishing researcher/research group.
Note: If when you submit your article it says that "your university pays", this means that the university handles the transfer of the money, but you still pay 10%-30% of the cost yourself at a later stage.
The University Library (UB) pays part of the cost of publication and then distributes the rest of the costs to each faculty twice a year.
Thereafter, the Faculty of Medicine invoices the publishing researcher/research group these costs. This means that when you publish, you will afterwards receive an internal invoice at the next billing date for the 10–30% of the list price that you are required to pay. Invoices are issued by the faculty twice a year, in June and December.
Everyone at the Faculty of Medicine who publishes in a journal that charges a publication fee must pay a part of the fee.
Note: If when you submit your article it says that "your university pays", this means that the university handles the transfer of the money, but you still pay a part of the cost yourself at a later stage.
Publishing fees paid by Swedish research funding bodies
The Swedish research funding bodies The Swedish Research Council, Forte, Formas, and Vinnova have decided to co-finance the publishing fee with publishers for journals that are fully open access. Copernicus, eLife, Frontiers, JMIR (Journal of Medical Internet Research), MDPI, MJS Publishing, Pensoft Publishing, and PLOS are covered by this decision, which means that
- All researchers and doctoral students associated with Lund University can publish in these journals without any charge to the author or the organisation.
- The agreement covers all article types.
- All articles are published under the CC-BY licence.
- The decision applies to articles accepted for publication after 1 January 2024.
Important to enter your and co-author affiliation with Lund University
To make it easier for publishers and funders to identify researchers from organisations included in the agreement, it is important to do the following:
- Indicate your affiliation with Lund University in the article and, if possible, in the publisher's manuscript management system.
- Corresponding authors' affiliation with Lund University must be stated in the published article.
- Use the university email (ending with "lu.se") when submitting your manuscript.
