The decision has been made in light of increased demands for clear roles and responsibilities in the University's IT security work.
Until this change, the network responsibility has followed the line of work.
"So in practice, the Head of Department has been responsible for his or her part of the network. A very difficult task, as the network within the Faculty is highly integrated, explains Colm Doyle, Head of the Library and ICT”, who has now become a so-called network owner as of May.
Systematic security work
The background to the change is that information and security work within the University and the Faculty has intensified in recent years, and there are now very clear requirements for systematic security work with a clear division of roles and documented processes around networks.
"The current complexity of the Faculty's computer network and integration means that it is not appropriate or possible to handle this responsibility at the department level – therefore it was necessary to take responsibility for this at faculty-wide level.”
"In practice, the change means a much clearer process regarding who is allowed to make changes in the existing computer network, as only people with assigned roles have the opportunity to request changes. In addition, this marks the beginning of long-term planning work on the Faculty's data infrastructure.”
A timetable for the changes?
"Planning is underway and the new structure for NetTools, the administrative tool for managing the data network, will be launched at the end of September.”
Will the change be noticeable to users in any way, and if so, how?
"The change mainly affects those who work actively with the information network. We will work more actively with the security requirements that exist, such as carrying out a logical segmentation of the Faculty's network, but this is not something that you notice as an ordinary user. We will come back with further information about this change and what it means this autumn.”
