The Department of Laboratory Medicine (ILM) is strengthening its support for researchers through a new strategic initiative. The role of pre-award grant facilitator will assist the department in developing competitive research proposals.

The new function is a strategic initiative by the department’s management to strengthen the ability to secure significant research funding.

The support functions at LU’s central offices carry out vital work by providing information about calls and support. However, there is currently a gap between this and the practical support researchers need to develop competitive applications. A Pre-Award Grant Facilitator is intended to fill this gap, to increase the number and quality of ILM’s applications“, says Johan Flygare, deputy head of department at ILM.

Building expertise

The new function will provide expert support to the department’s researchers, offering active assistance with grant writing and strategic coordination of application processes. The focus is on larger grant applications, particularly consortium projects under the EU’s Horizon Europe framework programme.

“I am convinced that this initiative will pay for itself through increased grant awards, whilst also creating an attractive alternative career path for postdoctoral researchers. The ambition is to develop a scalable model and establish a network of Pre-Award Grant Facilitators where expertise can be built up over time and shared with colleagues across LU”, says Johan Flygare.

The position of the Pre-Award Grant Facilitator, a full-time, fixed-term employment for 12 months, is now open for applications and is due to be filled shortly.
