It’s time to nominate the Faculty's Honorary doctors for 2026. This year, philosopher Jonna Bornemark and journalist Sara Heyman were appointed honorary doctors at the faculty, and now we want to continue to associate other "stars" with us through honorary doctorates. Do you have a prominent person in your network who you think could be suitable? If so, make sure to nominate that person latest 1 September 2026.

We want proposals highlighting people who can bring both attention and brilliance to the faculty and contribute to our activities for the future. If you nominate a person who is appointed to be an honorary doctor, you will be invited to the faculty's honorary doctorate dinner before the conferment ceremony on Friday 28 May 2027.

The nomination must include the following information:

  • Who is nominated
  • Brief justification based on significant efforts in one or more of the following:
    a) Medical and health science
    b) Medical and health education
    c) Interventions in society related to medicine and health
  • Assessment of how the nominee can strengthen the faculty through future collaboration
  • Full address, telephone number and email address of the nominee

Proposals must be sent no later than Monday 1 September as a PDF file via email to: ann [dot] ivarsson [at] med [dot] lu [dot] se (ann[dot]ivarsson[at]med[dot]lu[dot]se).

Please note that proposals for honorary doctors are confidential until the faculty board has made a decision and the person in question has been informed.

What is an Honorary doctorate?

An Honorary doctorate is an honorary title awarded by a faculty at a university to a person who has made a significant contribution to the activities in various ways. Honorary doctors are appointed to draw attention to particularly outstanding contributions in research, education or collaboration in an area relevant to medicine and health sciences.

Who can be nominated?

For example, prominent researchers at foreign universities who have made significant contributions to the Faculty through various types of collaborations, or people who, through their role in society, have made contributions of great importance to medicine and health sciences. A nominee should have good future potential to work positively for the Faculty's good reputation nationally and internationally. The nominee must be able to give attention and lustre to Lund University and the Faculty of Medicine – nationally and internationally.

It can be an international contact that has already meant a lot to the organisation, which we want to tie even closer. It may be a researcher in another field that the Faculty wants to reward through interdisciplinary recognition. It may also be a person who is not academically active her-/himself, but who in various ways has made a significant contribution in any of the Faculty's subject areas.

How is the selection done?

Received proposals will be prepared by a working group prior to presentation at the Faculty Board's meeting in October. The group makes an assessment with regard to the purpose of the Honorary doctorate and aspects of diversity according to current practice. The review panel will present proposals and assessment at the Faculty Board's meeting on Wednesday 30 September, when it will be decided who to appoint as Honorary doctors for 2027.
